Please Note: This product is for traditional Linux virtual servers only.
In addition to the CloudVPS backup account, which works with rsync and our rolling backup script, we offer the option of having a snapshot backup made every day as an addition to our VPS snapshot product for traditional Linux virtual servers.
A snapshot is a copy of the VPS, exactly as it is at the moment the snapshot is taken. This is an ideal method for building a preconfigured VPS with your solution / CMS / shop system that can be easily cloned to another VPS. In the CloudVPS Interface you can take snapshots manually. See our snapshot product page for more information.
When you purchase our snapshot product, you can also configure it to create a snapshot backup every day. This is then done every day at a random moment. You are allocated a certain amount of space, and the data is compressed, so the number of backups you can save depends on the size and the daily changes in the data. We guarantee that there will be at least 7 available and that the first and last backup will be saved. Backups in between will be deleted as necessary, keeping the intervals as even as possible.
Restoring a backup snapshot
From the CloudVPS Interface you can easily restore a backup to the VPS where the backup snapshot was taken. When the backup snapshot is written back to the same VPS, there is also the option to restore just a specific Unix path.
You can also restore the backup snapshot to a different VPS. What you are then actually doing is cloning the backup snapshot to the target VPS, which overwrites all the data on the target VPS with the backup snapshot from the source VPS.
When is a backup snapshot a suitable choice?
With a snapshot backup you can restore the entire state of the VPS. It is not feasible to restore an individual file (unless you know the entire Unix path). When your backup strategy requires you to be able to restore a control panel backup, an individual database dump or an individual file, for example, you would be better off choosing the rsync-based CloudVPS backup account.
WARNING: Control panel backups in combination with backup snapshots
We strongly advise you not to leave control panel backups of the local drive on in combination with backup snapshots. Control panel backups are stored in one large file for each account. Therefore the compression of the snapshots will not work well and you will not be able to save as many backup snapshots.
Essentials of the backup snapshot
- Setup: Very easy.
- Customisation: No option to change frequency, etc. yourself.
- Maintenance: You always have at least 7 backup snapshots available.
- Restoring: Very simple for the entire VPS, but more difficult to restore specific files and accounts.
- Location: The SAN on which the data for your virtual server is also stored.
- Backup time: The program takes a snapshot at a random time during the day.
- Maximum size: The maximum size of the harddisk is 80G.
