Compute Technical FAQ

Single cloud server FAQ

How is a new server created in Skyline?

You can use the New Server Wizzard for this. Here is a Youtube movie explaining the process:

What is the boot disk?

The boot disk is a persistent disk that always remains associated with the same cloud server. You can take images from cloud servers. It is not possible to downgrade the boot disk.

What is a Volume?

A volume is a flexible extra hard disk within CloudVPS Compute. All volumes are persistent (can exist separately from any cloud server) and can be detached from cloud servers to be re-used at a later point in time. Volumes can be upgraded by creating a larger volume from a copy of the original volume. Volumes can not be downgraded.

What harddisk operations are possible in Compute?

Read the knowledge base article for an overview of this.

What are snapshots?

A snapshot is a copy of a volume that is stored on the same storage medium. You can use them if you expect you might have to move back to a previous version of the volume. Snapshots are subject to a quota.

What are images?

An image is a copy of a volume that is stored in the object store. They are slower to take and deploy than a snapshot but since images are stored on a different storage platform they can be used to create extra certainty for important data. You can also upload your own images to deploy cloud servers from.

What are SSH keys used for and how?

We recommend using SSH key to access a Linux Server. CloudVPS will also have an SSH key in order to provide suport. If you remove this SSH key we will not enter your server unless we are forced to do so under Dutch law. If there is no CloudVPS SSH key on a Linux server then we can not provide support on the environment.

What is a Security group?

A security group can be seen as a firewall rule that makes it possible to connect to a server from a certain location and through a certain port or set of ports. It is also used to group different kinds of cloud servers (database and web servers for example).

How do you identify your resoures?

All resources are assigned their own UUID, please provide this UUID with any support call.

What do you use a userdata file for?

You can use a userdata file when creating the server to ensure the server configures in a certain way when first booting. Think about SSH keys, setting the hostname or starting up another configuration tool like Puppet or Chef.

What userdata file is used in the CloudVPS Images?

We use cloud-init in our images.

Advanced Setup, Clustering and Networking

How do I create a clustered setup?

The following steps need to be taken in order to create a cluster.

1. Create Network
2. Create Router
3. Create Security group
4. Create servers

How do I create a setup with IP failover?

Please see the relevant knowledge base article about this.

What are fixed IPs?

Fixed IPs are used to connect directly to the public internet. They can not be moved from server to server.

What are floating IPs?

Floating IPs can be used to connect with the public internet from a private network through a router. They belong to a customers' OpenStack account and can be moved from server to server.

What is a Network?

A network is basically a VLAN that separates the traffic from the virtual servers within the network from the rest of our network.

What is a Router?

A router can be used to relay traffic from the private network to the public internet.

Where can API documentation for compute be found?
