OpenStack IP Addressing

Overview

When launching an cloud server you need to specify its network configuration. For a simple single server setup, you can directly hook up to the public network using fixed IP addresses. If you plan on scaling your project to more sophisticated configurations involving front-end and back-end servers, it is recommended you create and use a private network, and obtain needed public addresses through Floating IPs.

Fixed IP addresses

If you have chosen for the public network configuration you will receive a public fixed IP address. Fixed IPs can not be remaped to other servers. When a server is terminated the assigned IP address will be added back to our general IP address pool.

Floating IP addresses

If you have chosen for the private network configuration your server will receive a private IP address which is not directly connected to the internet. Any direct internet related traffic is impossible. To connect a server with a private IP address to the internet you will need to assign a router to the relevant private network. Through this router you can send traffic using NAT. You subsequently need to add a Floating IP to the server in order to receive traffic. Floating IPs are IP addresses that can be assigned from server to server.
