Using own images in Compute

Overview

This article describes how to upload, use, and modify virtual machine images that are compatible with OpenStack.

What is a virtual machine image?

A virtual machine image is a single file which contains a virtual disk that has a bootable operating system installed on it.

Virtual machine images come in different formats, supported formats are:

  • qcow2
  • RAW
  • VHD
  • VMDK
  • VDI
  • ISO9660

Supported Architectures:

  • Intel 64 bits (x86_64)
  • Intel 32 bits (i386)
VirtIO driver and Windows performance

CloudVPS Compute servers need the VirtIO driver to achieve maximum performance. It is already included in Linux and FreeBSD but the driver needs to be needs to be added to Windows images.

Uploading a new image

1. Log in to https://stack.cloudvps.com
2. At the navigation pane under Compute, click Images.
3. Click Upload Image.
4. Specify a name for the Image.
5. Select the Type of the Image.
6. Select the Architecture of the Image.
7. Specify if the Image supports Cloud-Init.
8. Specify the Minimum Disk size (optional).
9. Specify the Maximum Disk size (optional).
10. Select the source File of the Image.
11. Click Upload Image.

Change Image Details

1. Log in to https://stack.cloudvps.com
2. At the navigation pane under Compute, click Images.
3. Select the Image from the list.
4. Change the Image details (i.e.: Name, Architecture, Cloud-Init Support, Minimum Disk size, Maximum Disk size).
5. Add Metadata (optional)

Delete an Image

1. Log in to https://stack.cloudvps.com
2. At the navigation pane under Compute, click Images.
3. Select the Image from the list.
4. Click on the delete button indicated by the cross icon to delete the specific Image.
