How do I create my own SSH key

On our OpenStack platform you must use an SSH key to login to your server. You also must use an SSH key to decrypt the Windows or Control Panel password. Emailing passwords is not safe and by using SSH keys we can guarantee that only the owner of the private key has access or can decrypt the data.

In this article we show you how to create your own SSH key.

Windows 10

    ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "uw_email@adres.nl"

Replace uw_email@adres.nl with your  OpenStack username.

Output:

    Generating public/private rsa key pair.

  • Accept the default value for the path to store the key
Enter a file in which to save the key (/c/Users/$user/.ssh/id_rsa):

  • Enter a passphrase. We strongly recommend you enter a secure passphrase:
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):
    Enter same passphrase again:

You can now use this key to login or decrypt the root password: https://www.cloudvps.com/helpcenter/general-faq/vpsoo/where-can-i-find-p...

Linux / OS X

  • Open a command prompt / terminal
  • Execute the following command:
    ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "uw_email@adres.nl"

Replace uw_email@adres.nl with your  OpenStack username.

Output:

    Generating public/private rsa key pair.

  • Accept the default value for the path to store the key
Enter a file in which to save the key (/home/$user/.ssh/id_rsa):

  • Enter a passphrase. We strongly recommend you enter a secure passphrase:
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):
    Enter same passphrase again:
