Are snapshots the same as backups?

No, a snapshot is not the same as a backup. A snapshot is an exact copy of the data that resides on the server the moment you create the snapshot. Therefore, restoring a snapshot only restores the data all at once. If you wish to restore files individually then we suggest to make use of file level based backups.
